Wilmington NC Homes for Sale: The Beach Communities

Wrightsville Beach

With over 500 miles of coastline, the Carolinas offer water-lovers a wealth of lifestyle choices. The Wilmington area is home to over 30 miles of these beautiful sandy shores. Just minutes from downtown Wilmington, you'll find the beaches of Wrightsville, Kure and Carolina. Just 30 miles north of Wilmington lies TopsailIsland, a quiet family beach that welcomes visitors to frequent the turtle hospital where endangered loggerheads are nursed back to good health. The affluent come to stay and play at Figure Eight and BaldHeadIslands. Real estate in these Wilmington beaches is booming. In fact, some areas showed over 90% appreciation in 2005!

In general, the WrightsvilleBeach, CarolinaBeach, KureBeach, and TopsailIsland real estate markets are stable and Wilmington waterfront properties sell quickly.  Expect to pay between $300,000 and $3 million for any single family oceanfront home in the Wilmington area.  This should be no surprise.  With Wilmington’s warm weather and sandy beaches, who wouldn’t want to own real estate just steps from the ocean?   Below are the beaches and waterfront communities nearest in proximity to the Wilmington area.

Carolina Beach is on a narrow slice of land between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic ocean- just 30 minutes from downtown Wilmington by car. A drive through CarolinaBeach reveals a pleasant 1950s-style beach town of modest cottages, increasingly more upscale single-family homes and an abundance of three- and four-story condominiums.

Kure Beach is mostly residential, dotted with modest cottages, new upscale houses and a number of beach motels. Just south of CarolinaBeach, KureBeach is a younger community that will maintain its local charm due to its location.

Wrightsville Beach is a summer retreat that, until WWI, was accessible only by boat and steam train.  Today this small 5-mile island community, situated between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, radiates village charm with resorts, condos and restaurants.

Topsail Island is a 26-mile-long barrier island approximately 30 minutes north of Wilmington. Topsail's summer population swells up to 35,000 compared to just 3,500 year-round residents. Residents here enjoy a relatively inexpensive, quiet lifestyle on the beach.
